Review: Death of Ink

Displaying thedeathofinkcover.jpg
The Death of Ink
Book One
By M. M. John

Synopsis:
Paige Langley’s life has always revolved around good grades and escaping her less than ideal home life…but once she meets Devon Connors, her life drastically changes.

Although, they share an instant attraction, Devon’s concealing a dark past. And an even darker secret…there’s a dead girl haunting him nightly.

Resolute to win the school’s writing contest, Paige will do just about anything to achieve her goals. So after she finds a binder containing information on a past murder and the illegal activities of the students, she believes the stories are fictional and the perfect way to win the contest.

But the owner of the manuscript, Devon Connors, has other plans. To keep Paige from exposing his secrets, Devon befriends her and even offers to help her write a winning story for the contest.
The chemistry between Paige and Devon is undeniable, but Paige doesn’t know if she can trust him. The deeper she digs into the dark underbelly of their high school, the more she realizes that some secrets are better left buried.

Review:
This book has me so conflicted! Do I like it or don't I? By the end of the book I had decided for the most part I liked Death of Ink, despite some of the oddities that bothered me while I read it.
I'm going to get what I didn't like about Death of Ink out of the way first because it is my least favorite part of reviewing novels.
Death of Ink is disjointed and confusing. You feel like you are missing pieces of the story and you kind of sit there wondering if you accidentally skipped something while you were reading or if  M.M. John simply decided not to include things that would clear up the plot. It is my belief that the author does this to create mystery and mystique for Paige and Devon but the technique falls short leaving the reader with incomplete characters.
The other tragic flaw of Death of Ink is that it left more questions asked than answered. Just as I really started getting into the story and invested in the characters I realized that there are very few pages left to read and nothing had been wrapped up. Then came the ending. Oh the ending .I sat there for about a minute and a half wondering where the rest of the book was. Surely a book can't end without concluding a single solitary story line. Yet it does. It was as if  M. M. John was about to miss the deadline and turned in an unfinished manuscript and it went to print.
What bodes well for Death of Ink is that when it ended and I was sitting there wondering where the rest of the book was I was actually interested in what would happen to Paige and Devon next. I was disappointed that I had reached the end and wanted more.
Death of Ink instantly drew me in with it's excellent writing and storytelling. The narrative was captivating. M. M. John creates likable characters with Paige and Devon. Both come from homes that have a lot of family issues that are beyond the usual divorced parents. Their love of writing as the basis of their friendship is unique and intriguing. Readers and writers a like should find the plot line interesting.
Death of Ink had the potential to be a four, even five, star book but the conclusion of the story and the jumpy narrative that leaves out plot made me rate it lower. But despite its flaws it is an interesting and quirky read I think literature lovers will enjoy.
Despite its short fallings I would probably pick up the next book in the series just to see what happens next and hopefully figure out some of the mysteries that were left unresolved in Death of Ink.

Review: The Girl

The Sanctum Book One:
The Girl
By Madhuri Blaylock

Review:
The Girl was a great urban fantasy and I would most definitely continue reading The Sanctum series.
I'm going to state up front that what I disliked the most about this book was the cover! (So superficial I know) It just doesn't give you the feel of the story that lies within its pages.
Madhuri Blaylock does an excellent job of building a world within our world. A world of magic and creatures we like to believe exist only within the pages of our books. A world that needs to be controlled, that needs order, and answers to one organization, The Sanctum.
The Sanctum's corruption and interpretation of prophecy seem to mirror what is going on within governments around the world today. With fear powering their every move and centuries of corruption within the organization they make sweeping decrees that soldiers follow blindly, trusting that they would never be misled by their rulers.
Dev is a wonderful and strong female character. She has been hurt and there are places inside her that are broken because of the actions of others. Instead of accepting it and her apparent fate she chooses to stand up and fight. To expose the evil and corruption of the ancient organization that is hunting her to the death.
Wyatt Clayworth's strong character  goes through the process of disillusionment, showing readers to question everything. To think for yourself and question the motives behind orders.
The Girl is a wonderful fantasy novel with a message. Your enemies are people too. They think and feel. They have families they love. They are not monsters. And if you accept that this is true you must question why an organization is so intent on destroying others. What do they fear so much? Usually it is the loss of power and control.
The Girl is easy to get lost in and I am looking forward to the next installment of the book. I can't wait to see what lies ahead for Dev and Wyatt.

Madhuri Blaylock is a lawyer by day, writer and avid shoe and dress buyer at all other times. She lives in Jersey City, but her heart remains firmly planted in Brooklyn via Snellville, Georgia. Her husband, Henry, is also a lawyer, and only a lawyer because he actually likes being a lawyer (go figure), probably always wanted to be a lawyer and is really, really good at all things lawyerly. He's also pretty hot.

She’s got a big kid, Miss Sydney, and a little kid, the one and only Dash. They're awesome and fierce and supremely cool and able to make her laugh at the strangest things. She would love to add a dog, some chickens, a goat and a burro to this crew. Everyone needs a burro.

Some of her favorites, in no particular order: ice cream, Kill Bill, four-inch heels, Matt Damon, tattoos, Laini Taylor, scotch on the rocks, The Sanctum trilogy, random office supplies, Martha's Vineyard, "The Girl" aka my Mini, Rihanna, Doc Martens, tulips, photo booths and dancing like a fool.

One day she plans to grow up. Right now, she’s enjoying the adventure.

Review: Final Life

Displaying finallifeKDPebook.jpg

Book Blurb:

Nothing sucks more than being forced to move cross country during senior year. And Dominique Wells doesn't think things can get any worse until she's invited to a quirky neighbor's party. When pressured into playing a magical card game, Dominique's world goes from sucky to terrifying. She begins having visions of a red desert and an evil presence--a presence who hints at past lives and promises to kill her.

Plagued by fear and suspicion, and unaware of a family secret kept hidden from her, Dominique is determined to live. Together with a mysterious and gorgeous guy who's moved in while his parents are away, and a hot, popular guy from school, Dominique must seek clues to her past if she's to survive. That, and keep her emotions in check for the two guys she suddenly can't stop thinking about because if she doesn't, she'll be dead. For real.

Review:
How can you dislike a story involving a love triangle, a battle between good and evil, and the last leg of someones reincarnation cycle?
Rose Garcia's Final Life was interesting, thought provoking and unique. An exhilarating read, a true page turner that I could not put down.
When faced with your own mortality what do you do? Do you give up and give in to what you believe fate has in store for you or do you stand up and fight. Rose Garcia weaves a beautiful tale about Dominique's courage to stand up and fight.
The tale of the battle between Good and Evil is a classic one. We see the story continuously throughout the history of literature, but somehow Rose Garcia twists the tale and makes it her own. This is a completely unique tale about the fight between the Righteous and the Fallen that will captivate anyone who picks it up.
Although the story is wonderful I think one of the most touching parts of Rose Garcia's Final Life is how she deals with the death and sacrifice of those we love. Losing a loved one is always difficult but how we allow their death to affect our lives can mean the most.
When we lose a friend we can sink into depression. We can turn to drugs or alcohol. We can easily fall into bed with someone just seeking comfort and companionship. Or we can live on in their memory. We can better ourselves and fight on for those we have lost. We can fight the evil that is in this world that has stolen those we loved. And when we do that their death is no longer meaningless.

This is what Rose Garcia showed me the most in Final Life. It's a message everyone, young and old, must hear.

Review: Impostor (Variants #1)

16135109

 Impostor
Variants #1
By Susanne Winnacker
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4)

Synopsis:

Admit it, you've thought about it. What if there are those among us that were just a bit... different? What if there DNA allowed them to do things us "normal" humans could not? And what if the Government not only knew about it but utilized these people to help solve crime and protect our country.
Tessa is one of those people that have a variation in their DNA. She can shape shift into anyone she has touched. Alec is faster and stronger than humanly possible. And now it is up to them to help solve the mystery of a serial killer in a small town community.

Review:

Imposter was a fabulous fun read that l couldn't put down.
A little bit X-Men, a little bit Fringe, a hint of Nancy Drew and then something entirely it's own... Sci-Fi fans looking for a good beach read should look no further.
I am a big fan of mystery and thrillers. Nancy Drew and Encyclopedia Brown were staples in my hose growing up. As I have gotten older I have gotten into the grittier mysteries like you can find on Bones and Criminal minds. Young adults that are starting to get into grittier mysteries will certainly enjoy Imposter.
The crimes are gruesome but don't go into to much gory detail for those that are squeamish. And then there is the hunt for the killer. Is it the brother of Madison, the girl Tessa is posing as? Or could it be her ex-boyfriend, who hasn't gotten over their breakup? Then there is the creepy kid in class who is always staring at her... and there is something about her English teacher too... You will turn page after page not realizing how late it is or how much time has gone by as you follow Tessa and Alec in their hunt to find a killer, before he kills Tessa too.
I really liked the character of Tessa. Disowned by her mother because of her variation Tessa lives at the FEA. That kind of abandonment leaves scars on the soul and Susanne Winnacker deftly portrays the pain of abandonment with Tessa. She is sad and lonely and seeks companionship to replace the family she never had. When she is tasked with shape shifting into Madison and picking up living where Madison left off of course it is easy for her to loose her sense of self and want to become Madison permanently. Who wouldn't want to escape into someone elses life when they had everything you ever dreamed of.
Alec is definitely a swoony boy that you will adore. Torn between what he is told is right and his heart anyone who loves a love story will enjoy Alec's struggle to resist falling for the girl he knows is off limits. And although things don't get too steamy there are a couple of nice kissing scenes involved too.
Imposter is more than just a Sci-Fi thriller. It is a coming of age story that everyone can connect with. There are things in all of our lives we wish were different, sometimes we look at people and wish we could switch places with them. We think life would be easier. But everyone has their own personal battles and you have to be strong enough to be yourself.
I can't wait for the next book in the series and I will definitely continue following the story of Tessa and Alec.

Review: Witch Finder

 Witch Finder
By Ruth Warburton

Witch Finder (Witch Finder, #1)

Synopsis:
Luke has waited his entire life to join the brotherhood of witch hunters. Ever since he saw his parents murdered at the hands of a witch. Now he is finally old enough. He has passed the first two tests, now he just has to pass the third and final test. Kill the witch that he randomly picks from the book of witches.
And isn't it just his luck that he picks a sixteen year old witch with some very powerful ties. It's the witch or him in a fight to the death. Only one of them can survive.
Rosa's family is on the brink of bankruptcy and she is to be married off so that her cruel brother and uncaring mother can gain power, status and riches. All she wants is to be free. Free to use her magic, ride her horse. Free to be her own person.
Can Luke kill Rosa and finally join the brotherhood? Or will he lose himself instead?

Review:
Ruth Warburton's Witch Finder is a harsh look at the world in a brutal time.
In a time where women have no rights and must marry for power and for the sake of their family there is a hint of Austen in this tale. Rosa wants nothing more than to be free. Free of her mother, free of her brother Alexis and certainly not married off to the cruel Sebastian. But that is not an option for her.
The story of Luke, the novice Witch Hunter and Rosa, the beauty filled with magic and with ties to the most powerful witches in the world, is a predictable one. The kids from opposite sides of the tracks fall for one another. Very Romeo and Juliet and not done particularly uniquely or well.
The brutality towards women and animals is stomach turning in it's detail. Although it accurately desplays the psychotic nature of Sebastian I would have liked a warning as to how graphic some of the violence would be. It was a bit disgusting and somewhat unnecessary.
Overall I was disappointed with Witch Finder. I will not read the others in the series and I don't recommend it.

SNEAK PEEK

“Dominique, please. Hear us out,” Dad said.
“No! You hear ME out! You brought me to this stupid city, and I hate it here! Everything about this place sucks, and now, because of you, I’m crazy!” Tear trickled down my face, and I wiped them away fast. “Okay? Fucking crazy! And it’s all your fault!”
Instantly I bit my lip because I regretted my words, but they were out already. Besides, they needed to know how pissed I was.
Dad paced the room. “You have every right to be upset, Dominique. We never meant for any of this to happen.”
I didn’t even notice Farrell at my side until he took my hand.  “Dominique, I told you. You’re not crazy.”

My head began to swoon. My knees buckled. Every time I was near Farrell, a funny feeling came over me. Sometimes it was a subtle dizziness, other times a tingle throughout my body, but always the feeling warmed me. Calmed me. And seemed so natural and familiar.
“What are you doing to me?” I whispered.

Review: Eve & Adam

 13493463

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4)

Eve & Adam
By Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate

Synopsis:

Eve is the daughter of Terra Spiker. As in Spiker Biopharmaceuticals, a multibillion dollar company dedicated to medical researchers. The cutting edge of medical research.
And it's the Spiker Biopharmaceutical Research Facility that Eve is brought to after she was hit by a car. An injury so bad she may lose her leg.
Shut up in her suite at the research facility Eve is bored. She want's her friends, she even wants to go back to school, but that's out of the question. Then Terra is struck with a brilliant idea. She gives Eve a workspace and sets her to the task of creating the perfect boy with the new computer program her company has designed to teach genetics to children. Eve goes about creating Adam with help at times from her "drug addict slut loser friend" (In the words of Terra) Aislin.
Yes, Aislin does have a penchant for getting into trouble but Eve loves her completely. And the feeling is mutual, but even when she has the best of intentions Aislin gets into a couple major messes and needs Eve to come to the rescue.
Enter Solo, the mysterious and gorgeous guy that arrived with Terra after the accident. He is Eve's ticket out of the Research Facility. He's been living there since the death of his parents and has figured out all of the facilities security flaws. He can smuggle her in and out of the facility with minimal recording of their actions, and what the security camera has recorded he can delete later. How does he know all of the security flaws? Because he's been exploiting them to take down Terra Spiker and her company. He just needs to get his hands on the information that could land her in jail forever.
But can he complete his quest after getting to know Eve?

Review:

I loved Eve & Adam. It felt like a breath of fresh air. I breezed through the book without realizing how fast it went by and when it was over I was left wanting more. What else can you ask for in a book?
And I have to admit that it won extra points for being set in the Bay Area. But everyone gets excited when a book is set where they grew up don't they? So little bit of bias!
Eve's naivety, hurt and impulsivity make her a great protagonist. You enjoy watching her grow and learn throughout the novel. Her loyalty and love is fierce and admirable. It is easy to fall in love with her.
Solo's quest for the truth and pursual of exposing crimes against humanity make him the perfect "bad boy" any girl could easily fall for. A rebel with a cause is always attractive. The fact that his most tragic flaw is to fall for the enemies daughter makes him just that much more likeable. Although it is a wonderful Romance Sci-Fi, Eve & Adam also brings up important morality questions.
Is it ok to play God? What is ok to do in the pursuit of science? Do the benefits of these pursuits outway the actions we took to get there? It is a great introduction to how we come about our medical cures in the modern world and some of the horrors that go on behind the scenes.
A definite Must Read!

Fate On Fire: Feudlings In Smoke

>

Title: Feudlings in Smoke
Author: Wendy Knight
Series: Fate on Fire #1.5
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Published: January 14th, 2014

Watching helplessly while your baby sister saves the world alone? It kinda sucks.
Will Delacour is one of the most powerful sorcerers to ever live. He’s Guard to the Edren Prodigy—his sister, Ari. But he walked away from the war, refusing to fight in a cause he didn’t believe in. He was deemed a traitor by the powerful Family, and now there’s a price on his head that leaves him trapped in a prison of his own making. And he can’t even tell the love of his life what she means to him because of the magical war that still controls their lives.
Instead of embracing his destiny, Will is forced to watch as Ari goes into battle over and over again, facing her enemies alone. She might be okay with it, but he’s not. He doesn’t believe in the war, but he does believe in her, and he knows his place is fighting by her side. Somehow, Will has to find a way to be there when Ari needs him , even if it means he forfeits his own life in the process.

----------------------------------------------------
Ari pointed a finger at him, “Don't think I've forgotten that little stunt you pulled today. I'm debating over an adequate punishment.” She shoved herself to her feet, crossing the room and touching a finger to the spark of the doorway she'd left burning. The portal bloomed to life, and he could see the airway hanger, and the sport utility vehicle she'd affectionately named Beep, waiting for her. She stepped through, but paused just on the other side. “Will?”
“Yeah, baby sister?” he asked with a smile. She was going to tell him that he needed to lighten up, or that he wasn't allowed to lecture boys, or that she forgot his pizza, which she had, and now that he thought about it he was mildly annoyed, but she surprised him.
“You always say that you aren't there to protect me like you're supposed to. I think you don't realize something.” She tipped her head sideways, considering him while his mouth hung open. “You trained me, Will. Without that, I would die a thousand times before the Prodigy ever found me. And today, you stopped that e-mail. You don't have to be fighting by my side to protect me.” She cracked the barest hint of a sarcastic smile. “Anyway, I'm an uber-powerful warrior. I don't need a babysitter.” Her sarcastic smile turned sad. “I need a brother who reminds me that I'm not a monster. Who loves me and always has my back. Who reminds me that I still have hope. If not for you, I would be lost. Remember that, Will.”

----------------------------------------------------

Wendy Knight was born and raised in Utah by a wonderful family who spoiled her rotten because she was the baby. Now she spends her time driving her husband crazy with her many eccentricities (no water after five, terror when faced with a live phone call, etcetera, etcetera). She also enjoys chasing her three adorable kids, playing tennis, watching football, reading, and hiking. Camping is also big: her family is slowly working toward a goal of seeing all the National Parks in the U.S.

You can usually find her with at least one Pepsi nearby, wearing ridiculously high heels for whatever the occasion may be. And if everything works out just right, she will also be writing.

KILLER FROST
Release Date: February 25, 2014

Synopsis:
The final battle has come and everyone is looking too Gwen to lead them to victory. But she's still not sure how she is supposed to achieve that. Can she find it in herself to rid the world of this evil scourge or will this be the end of Gwen Frost?
Review:
Killer frost was a great ending to the Mythos Academy series that all fans will be satisfied with. I have to admit I didn't enjoy it as much as Midnight Frost. The action doesn't start until about halfway into the book and there is less time spent with the mythological creatures Gwen cares for (which tends to be my favorite part of the series.)
I will admit I cried. Be prepared to read about the loss that comes with all great battles between good and evil. Gwen and her friends continue to inspire and you will root for them and feel their triumphs and their anguish as their story comes to an end.
I also really enjoyed the use of mythology throughout the series. Whether you know a lot about mythology and like to hear modern takes on the ancient myths of you are new to mythology Jennifer writes in such a way that everyone can enjoy it. For those new to mythology the story certainly makes you crave more and may lead you to learn more about the myths of old.
Jennifer Estep not only weaves a wonderful conclusion to her Mythos Academy series but leaves her readers with a wonderful message to carry with them, "Self-sacrifice is a very powerful thing, especially if you do it of your own free will," In a world where people are becoming increasingly more selfish it is an important statement to remember. The sacrifice of ones self and ones time can change the course of history.
Overall I loved the Mythos Academy series. Was it life changing? No, not really. But it was a great series that was entertaining and included tons of important messages that even adults need to be reminded of at times. The loyalty, friendship, faith and bravery shown through out the entire series is inspiring and it's something every reader should aspire to emulate.
